Product Description

The Jalapeño, classified as Capsicum Annuum, is renowned as one of the most popular chilli varieties globally. Originating from the town of Jalapa in Veracruz, Mexico, this chilli is named after its place of origin. The fruits are characteristically conical and thick-walled, typically harvested and utilized while still green. As they mature, Jalapeños often turn red and may develop a unique 'corking' pattern, which appears as light-coloured streaks or marks. Fresh Jalapeños are a versatile ingredient, adding a spicy kick to salsas, and are perfect when thinly sliced for nachos or as pizza toppings. They are also commonly pickled for longer preservation. Upon ripening, Jalapeños are frequently smoked and dried, transforming into Chipotles, which are then used to impart a smoky flavour to sauces, soups, and stews.

Growing Instructions

Sow: Jan-Mar

Flowers: Jul-Oct

This plant is adaptable to various soil types and thrives best in partially shaded areas, ideally beneath deciduous trees or shrubs. Such a setting replicates their natural environment where, in spring, the absence of tree foliage allows ample light for vigorous spring growth. Later in the year, the shade helps the bulbs to develop underground. However, deep shade is not suitable for bluebells. Planting can be done directly in semi-shaded open ground or in seed trays. Lightly scratch the soil surface and scatter the seeds on top. The optimal time for sowing is from late summer onwards. Exposure to frost or snow after sowing can enhance germination. It's important to avoid using heated propagators, as this native species requires cooler conditions to grow effectively.
