Product Description

Hyacinthoides Non-Scripta, commonly known as the English Bluebell, is widely regarded as one of Britain's most beloved wildflowers. In recent times, there has been considerable discussion about the Spanish Bluebell and its potential impact on the native species. There is a real concern that the native English Bluebell could be at risk due to cross-pollination and hybridisation with its Spanish counterpart. To counter this threat, we are offering seeds to support the growth of the native variety. These plants will typically begin flowering in their fourth year, and subsequently, they should start self-seeding, gradually creating the iconic 'carpet' seen in many ancient woodlands. The abundant late spring flowering serves as a fitting reward for the efforts made to preserve and rejuvenate this treasured perennial wildflower.

Growing Instructions

Sow: Oct-Nov

Flowers: April-May

This plant is adaptable to various soil types and thrives best in partially shaded areas, ideally beneath deciduous trees or shrubs. Such a setting replicates their natural environment where, in spring, the absence of tree foliage allows ample light for vigorous spring growth. Later in the year, the shade helps the bulbs to develop underground. However, deep shade is not suitable for bluebells. Planting can be done directly in semi-shaded open ground or in seed trays. Lightly scratch the soil surface and scatter the seeds on top. The optimal time for sowing is from late summer onwards. Exposure to frost or snow after sowing can enhance germination. It's important to avoid using heated propagators, as this native species requires cooler conditions to grow effectively.
