Growing Instructions

Sow indoors: Mar-Aug

Harvest: Jun-Oct

Begin preparing your soil in late winter or early spring. Clear away any stones and cultivate the soil until it achieves a fine, crumbly texture. If the soil in your garden isn't ideal, consider using a large container instead. Avoid adding manure, as it can over-enrich the soil for the seeds.

Sowing: Sow successively from March to August. Carrot seeds are quite small, so try to plant them thinly to minimise the need for thinning later, which also reduces the risk from pests. A useful technique is to mix the seeds with a handful of sharp sand, then sow them together. The sand helps with drainage. Once the seedlings display their first rough leaves, thin them to about 5cm (2 inches) apart.

Aftercare: Carrot seeds are prone to drying out and can take 14 to 21 days to germinate, especially in summer. To keep them moist, cover the damp soil with wet newspaper. Once the seedlings show their first rough leaves, thin them out to about 10cm apart. This reduces competition and allows the carrots to grow quickly to harvest size. During their growth, carrots require little attention, but ensure they are well-watered – insufficient water can lead to coarse, woody roots.

Harvesting: You can harvest carrots from June to October. Begin pulling them up as soon as they are large enough to eat, preferably in the evening for the best results.
